The special bonds with pigs, cows and chickens at this Brazilian sanctuary, whose name means ‘Love that saves’, will melt anyone’s heart.

Love that saves is a sanctuary that treats animals with respect

Sanctuary ‘Amor Que Salva’ (Love that Saves) is an animal shelter in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Founded by Márcia, Luiza and Fabiana Willers, they began to transform the lives of animals that had been reduced to products. It all began with rescuing pets in their home, but they soon wanted to host more saved animals, so they bought a farm in July 2019. In March 2020 they rescued 4 mistreated and soon-to-be-slaughtered pigs. This was the birth of Santuario ‘Amor Que Salva’.

They could no longer ignore the victims of the dairy, egg and meat industry and they started to provide shelter and give love to ‘slaughter’ animals.

Today, the sanctuary is home to more than 95 animals. The sanctuary actively also aims to make people rethink what they eat. They see animals as friends, not food.

— “Even totally inexperienced about how to deal with animals, with each passing year we felt more the need to have contact and be able to give a life to these victims of exploitation of the meat, milk and egg industry. In addition to wanting to provide people's contact with animals so that they knew veganism.”
“For our family, the transition to veganism was a unanimous decision and occurred in 2017.” — “Even totally inexperienced about how to deal with animals, with each passing year we felt more the need to have contact and be able to give a life to these victims of exploitation of the meat, milk and egg industry. “Our initial intention was only to take care of the dogs and cats we had, rescue a calf and take care of Lucy (elderly sheep who was abandoned by the former owner of the site). However, when we rescued Joaquim in October 2019, a victim of the milk industry, we could not close our eyes to the countless discarded calves we saw when we went to get Joaquim's milk.”
They acquired the site in July 2019, however, without structure and with insecurity linked to the lack of experience of how to take care of animals. “Our initial intention was only to take care of the dogs and cats we had, rescue a calf and take care of Lucy (elderly sheep who was abandoned by the former owner of the site). “When we finally came across the cruelty that animals are subjected to in the milk, meat and egg industry, we could not ignore this fact and a strong feeling of hopelessness and sadness was part of our days. When we are with animals, we can believe in pure and true feelings. Through them we discover the simplest way to be happy, which is to give and receive love unconditionally. Caring for and living with animals has become a purpose of life.”
The name of the sanctuary “Love that Saves” is interconnected with the family’s transition with veganism. “When we finally came across the cruelty that animals are subjected to in the milk, meat and egg industry, we could not ignore this fact and a strong feeling of hopelessness and sadness was part of our days. “We count on our ‘godmothers’ and ‘godparents’ to keep the Sanctuary active and to be able to welcome more animals and change their lives.”
