In recent weeks, dozens of traffic lights encouraging citizens to stop eating meat and go vegan have been appearing around the Belgian capital.
Brussels: TRAFFIC LIGHTS WANT YOU TO ‘GO VEGAN’
For the past few weeks, traffic lights in the Belgian capital, Brussels, have been encouraging its citizens to ditch animal-products and go vegan. The message ‘GO VEGAN’ has been appearing on the green signal on dozens of traffic lights across the city, with the red signal flashing ‘STOP MEAT’.
The signals have been left this way for a number of weeks to be viewed by thousands of passers-by
While it is still unclear how the pro-vegan messages have appeared, there is growing speculation that animal-welfare activists have organised the traffic light makeover.
Featuring the phrases “STOP MEAT” over the red light and “GO VEGAN” over the green signal, the lights have left vegans and activists feeling pleased but also somewhat confused.
Many vegans have praised the signs calling it a “brilliant” initiative, with many hoping to see similar signs appearing in their hometowns, whilst others have speculated as to how the signs came to appear across the city.
Some have wondered whether the guerilla-style signs are the “secret” work of local animal rights activists seeking to promote vegansim in the city.
However, according to a Brussels resident, this theory seems unlikely due to the fact the signs have not been removed and have instead been left for a number of weeks to be viewed by thousands of passers-by every day.
The unnamed resident said: “I’m sure it hasn’t been done secretly because it would have only lasted a few days, it’s been going on for weeks.“
